The majority of parents who conceived through assisted reproduction plan to tell their children about their conception, but they're often uncertain how to go about it, a UK survey suggests.

The study included couples who had conceived using their own eggs and sperm, with the help of either conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

A woman's egg is made pregnant with sperm in a lab dish, then imbedded in her womb after few days. A latest form of IVF is ICSI that can be used whenever a problem with the number, function or quality of a man's sperm; it includes injecting a single sperm into an egg without deviation, which step-ups the chances it will be made pregnant successfully.

In the new study, researchers found that among parents of 181 5- and 6-year-olds who had been conceived through standard IVF or ICSI, most either planned to tell their children about their conception or had already done so.

Overall, 16 percent of mothers and 21 percent of fathers were undecided about the issue, while a handful of fathers -- but no mothers -- said they would never tell their children about their conception.

The survey also found that while most parents wanted to tell their children about their conception, there was some uncertainty about when and how to broach the topic. The large majority of parents who planned on telling their children said they would like the help of some "child-friendly" literature.

"Other" - it appears on most public opinion surveys as the final choice of a category. It's usually found at the bottom, serving as an often-ignored, informational catchall.

In the realm of surveys, "other" is the respondent's chance to exercise a degree of poetic license within the otherwise cold, matter-of-fact nature of market research. Here, a person can do more than just check a box or fill in a dot; it's a chance to express a long hidden opinion or a passing thought - an unexpected creative outlet.

In 2005, National Shopping Service issued a 25-question customer satisfaction survey for automotive repair services. Of the 3,674 people who responded, 656 chose the option of "other" to express themselves, enough to place this usually generic survey tail-ender into the top ten overall for both men and women.

A frequent response to "other" came from those who requested a television for the waiting room, while others didn't want one there at all. Some opinions were more specific:

"If there is a TV in the waiting room, make sure it gets a clear picture and no soap operas on. A news channel is preferred."

"I would not like the waiting area to have a loud TV stuck on annoying daytime shows, rather, interesting travel videos."

The importance of perception was important to customers in regard to the mechanics themselves:

"I want a qualified repair man, not a young kid who thinks he knows it all."

"If for some reason my husband is with me and it is my car I bring in, I expect the employee to speak to me and not be ignored."

"I don't like to see signs saying that the business isn't responsible for any stolen items. I think they should have the kind of employees working for them that won't steal out of customer's cars!"

Practicality also entered the picture. One person thought providing a low-cost loaner was a good idea, while another suggested providing a telephone to call for a ride or consult with a spouse. The request of extra assistance for the disabled and the elderly was mentioned as well.

Customer service in general was a popular topic. More than one person stated a dislike for mechanics "trying to upsell extras" perceived as "unnecessary." Another customer requested a renovation of the garage itself:

"I would like a window from the waiting area so I can observe the work being done on my car."

Time is important to everyone, and automotive repair customers are no different. The issue of time came up frequently:

"I want an estimate of time, and that [the] time [is to] be accurate within 15 minutes."

"I want a realistic estimate of the time it will take to complete the estimate AND I want a realistic estimate of the time it will take to fix the problem."

"For services that will take more than one hour, [I'd like] a shuttle service to the nearest mall."

Requests also included the installation of vending machines, a children's area, or supplying reading material "less than two years old." In fact, reading material was a rub with several of the survey participants. For example:

"[Provide] current magazines for both female and male, and NO obscene, girly posters all over the place." Or, "If there are reading materials present I would like a variety, not just Motor Trend, Harley World and NASCAR Racing."

To some respondents, first appearances and upkeep matter:

"I do not want a waiting area that has dusty chairs with worn fabrics, nor for my car to smell like grease when I get back into it."

"Landscaped areas need to be litter-free and recently mowed and trimmed."

"I'm very particular about the cleanliness of the bathroom. Usually gas station bathrooms are awful."

Other customers want more than just having their car repaired:

"I want a clean waiting area, no TV, sound-reducing cubicles with comfortable chairs, up-to-date popular magazines, complimentary fountain drink stations and a coin operated snack vending machine available. And offer a repeat customer award."

"A telephone would be nice. At the Mercedes dealership, they have desks with computer plug-ins."

"I want my car to be completely hand-washed after I obtain service from this company, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as a sign stating this."

"I would like to see more women working at these places. I would feel more comfortable if there were a woman around."

For one respondent, workplace liability means nothing:

"I would like the choice to watch what they are repairing on my car - at my own risk."

And, finally, one person combined his wishes and his critique in one breath:

"I want to have some place to smoke and maybe some newspapers or magazines to peruse. And as for that coffee, I want REAL cream, not that powdered junk!"

For those on the lower rungs of the property ladder, the cost of moving from an average terraced home priced at ?149,906 to a semi-detached of ?174,744 is ?5,304 in England and Wales. In 2000 home movers paid ?3,333 to move from the same type of home*, that's an increase of 59 percent compared to house price growth of 95 percent on these types of homes.

However, the costs are up dramatically the further up the ladder home movers go. Moving from an average semi valued at ?174,744 to a detached home worth ?293,248 costs a massive ?12,535 today compared to ?4,535 in 2000** (an average detached property cost ?161,086 in 2000). That's an increase in fees of 176 percent compared to house price growth of 70 percent. This can be largely attributed to detached properties having gone through the government's three percent stamp duty threshold set at ?250,000.

Andy Gray, head of mortgages for the Woolwich said: "Contrary to popular opinion the increase in moving fees since the start of the decade for people on the lower rungs of the property ladder has not kept pace with house price inflation, and therefore should not be putting them off getting on the property ladder or taking the next step up. Competition amongst solicitors and estate agents has increased as the less buoyant market has meant less business to chase.

"However, it's at the top end of the market that people are getting unsettled by headline numbers like ?25,000 to move up from a semi to a detached. At these levels people are thinking seriously about extending or converting a basement or loft which can be more cost effective than moving."
Regional highlights
Since the beginning of the millennium, London fees for moving from an average priced terraced to a semi have increased by more than one and half times the rate of house price growth, as these homes now fall into the three percent stamp duty bracket, whereas in 2000 homes only made it into the one percent threshold. Londoners now pay ?16,659 to move from a terraced property to a semi, that's around ?9,500 more than 2000 and can be compared to a mover in the North who pays out just ?3,427.

In five out of 10 regions the buying and selling fees have outstripped house price growth when moving from an average priced semi to a detached. The South East is the worst affected area outside of London, as fees have outstripped house price growth by nearly four times and would cost a home mover ?15,580. This compares to ?5,101 in Wales which is one of the regions where moving costs have risen more slowly than house prices.

How first time buyers fare:
Fees for first time buyers to buy a home have risen pretty much in line with house price growth 94 percent and 99 percent respectively since the start of the decade. ? In order to make a living at paid surveys, I signed up for 3 paid survey sites. I was taking surveys about 2-3 hours a day (including weekends) at first. My first months check was $189.47 cash plus $75 in gift certificates. Not a lot, and not a good hourly salary, but this was just the beginning. The 2nd month was better. In my last article, I focused a lot on affiliate marketing and my successes and failures concerning this money making program. Prior to affiliate marketing, I focused on making money through paid online surveys. Let's first get to the main question at hand: Do Paid Surveys Really Pay? The short answer to this is yes. Paid online surveys do actually pay and in most cases, this is not a scam or a waste of time. Prior to really answering this question thoroughly, let me explain what "Paid Surveys" really mean. While looking for "Online Money Making Opportunities" online, I am sure we have all come across the paid survey ads. When I was initially looking to make a little bit of extra cash to supplement my current income, it seemed to be the most ideal solution. At first, I tried to be "frugal" about it and hunt out paid survey sites on my own. I found about 5 or six sites that promoted offering to pay for taking surveys. I signed up for them, got on their mailing list, and nothing! I waited about 2 weeks for "a survey" and did not get anything. Very annoying! I continued to research the topic (in forums) and started to realize that 5 sites are not enough to get started. That prompted me to join a paid survey site. This is when I learned what "Paid Surveys" is all about!In order to make paid surveys work, you need to step out of the box a little bit. There is MORE to paid surveys than just "Paid Surveys". Remember, the whole point to getting paid for surveys is for companies to collect data, build profiles and become more successful marketers. Filling out paid surveys online is just one way to do this. Phone interviews are a way to collect data. Online focus groups exist where you join a real-time discussion online. Also, you can read other people?s email and get paid for it. While this seems strange, you can get paid a few cents per email, and this can add up in a short hour! There are about a half-dozen more ways as well to earn money through paid survey opportunities. Getting back to the original question again: Yes, you can get paid for you opinion! Most surveys I have gotten range between $5 and $25 each (for about 15 minutes to an hour of your time). Getting paid to read emails is about one cent to ten cents per email read (and I have made up to about $15 in an hour doing this). The other thing to be aware of is the payment options. A lot of paid survey sites offer compensation in either money and/or prizes. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on why you are doing these programs. Some of the prize sites are pretty nice and you can get more value in prizes than cash. The main point to be made here is that you will be paid for you time. If you fill out a survey or sit in on a focus group, your time will be compensated. You commitment goes no further than the survey or interview or the group you attend. For people like stay-at-home parents or even college students, this is a great way to bring in a little bit of extra cash at your own leisure. A lot of it is quite a brain-dead exercise that you can do while watching some bad reality TV in the background. My biggest issue with paid surveys is its lack of residual income as well as its income potential. I see ads that advertise that you can make thousands of dollars per month doing surveys. Their math seems to be pretty convincing as well: If you do two paid surveys a day at $20 each, for 30 days, that is $1200 per month! Wow! How easy! Not quite reality, though. If you sign up with enough paid survey sites, you can expect to get (on average) about 5-10 surveys per week, and most of these pay in the $5-$10 range. If you also join some focus groups and phone interviews, you can add an additional $100 per week. So in reality, making $500 is very doable, but that is near the ceiling for cash potential. It is still not bad! That is an extra $6000 per year (and a fairly respectable car payment!). If you were looking for a higher paying online opportunity, I would then recommend affiliate marketing. Online marketing provides the potential for a lot of residual money (money that is earned while you are not actually driving it) and its earning potential can be in the thousands to tens of thousands per month. Affiliate marketing does require a lot more commitment, initial set-up and a bit of training (all of which is achievable to anyone, as long as they are focused on their goals!). In summary, I would like to give a few suggestions to those who are planning on trying to make money through paid survey programs:

1) Sign up for as many paid surveys as you can! - Most paid survey sites provide you with only one or two survey opportunities per month. If you are signed up on 50 sites, you now can about 2 surveys per day.

2) Sign up for a Paid Survey Link Site - So where do you find these 50 or so sites? That is what these paid survey link sites are all about. Most of them cost about $35 to join, but it is a one time fee (for any reputable site). Trying to find 50 sites on your own would take 10s of hours (and remember, time is money that you can be making filling out surveys!). 3) Funnel all of your paid survey email into one, new, dedicated email account. - I found that some paid survey opportunities can appear as spam and become lost in a regular email account.

4) Stay Organized! - As you start receiving paid online surveys, start a spreadsheet of whom you are working for and what you expect to be paid. When trying to manage over 50 sites, you can very easily forget which companies owe you money or prizes.

5) Remember, you are still an employee of the paid survey sites! - Be sure to fill out the surveys accurately and consistently. Surveys that have box number three filled out throughout the entire questionnaire provide them with no feedback and you will more than likely stop receiving survey requests. Also, if you start ignoring a lot of requests, they will stop sending them.

Paid surveys are an honest and solid way to make a little extra money on the side. Like any money making opportunity, there is a little bit of initial overhead time, but with paid surveys, once you are set up, you are set up for awhile. You CAN make money working from home and paid surveys are a fairly safe, easy and risk-free way of doing so.

Getting back to the original question again: Yes, you can get paid for you opinion! Most surveys I have gotten range between $5 and $25 each (for about 15 minutes to an hour of your time). Getting paid to read emails is about one cent to ten cents per email read (and I have made up to about $15 in an hour doing this). The other thing to be aware of is the payment options. A lot of paid survey sites offer compensation in either money and/or prizes. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on why you are doing these programs. Some of the prize sites are pretty nice and you can get more value in prizes than cash.

The main point to be made here is that you will be paid for you time. If you fill out a survey or sit in on a focus group, your time will be compensated. You commitment goes no further than the survey or interview or the group you attend. For people like stay-at-home parents or even college students, this is a great way to bring in a little bit of extra cash at your own leisure. A lot of it is quite a brain-dead exercise that you can do while watching some bad reality TV in the background. My biggest issue with paid surveys is its lack of residual income as well as its income potential.

I see ads that advertise that you can make thousands of dollars per month doing surveys. Their math seems to be pretty convincing as well: If you do two paid surveys a day at $20 each, for 30 days, that is $1200 per month! Wow! How easy! Not quite reality, though. If you sign up with enough paid survey sites, you can expect to get (on average) about 5-10 surveys per week, and most of these pay in the $5-$10 range. If you also join some focus groups and phone interviews, you can add an additional $100 per week. So in reality, making $500 is very doable, but that is near the ceiling for cash potential. It is still not bad! That is an extra $6000 per year (and a fairly respectable car payment!). If you were looking for a higher paying online opportunity, I would then recommend affiliate marketing. Online marketing provides the potential for a lot of residual money (money that is earned while you are not actually driving it) and its earning potential can be in the thousands to tens of thousands per month. Affiliate marketing does require a lot more commitment, initial set-up and a bit of training (all of which is achievable to anyone, as long as they are focused on their goals!). This could be the very first question that you must ask yourself before anything else. You got to demand yourself to an answer to this. Why the heck on earth would anybody pay for this "Junk" you're selling? Yup, "Junk", as I phrased it. So, still be very proud of your product or service? Truly you're 100% proud of it? You truthfully and deeply believe people would be dumb by NOT buying from you?

Well...you passed the first barrier! You're ready to start go to next stage.

2. The basic business needs 3 things: Lawyer, CPA, and Creative or crazy fellow, which could very well be you.

Almost every business gets themselves for the first two. It's understandably so. Good creative person are really hard to find, hard to manage, and you'll never sure of what you're paying for.

Every established and sizeable business knows the creative side plays a heavier weight than the lawyer and CPA. CPA's and lawyers can help you when you are up there. And your business marketing campaign need to strive to achieve equivalent level of effects. And it needs to be at a more abstract level by means of having an attractive Business Name, Eye Catching Business Graphics, Professionally dressed-up staff. 6. Your Business Identity; Your Business Equity.

Does Size matter? - How many questions is too many in your online survey?

Surveys are all about collecting information. To get the right information you need to ask the right questions. While 'the right questions' is covered elsewhere, here I am going to discuss the number of questions as an aspect of design.

As with most things the answer is "it depends". However with online surveys a good rule is the fewer the better. How many times have we seen a great focussed survey get a poor response because every person in the approval chain has decided to add another question? The logic being that seeing we are asking people questions I would like to add just one more. This inevitably will be somewhat off topic and with each additional item the integrity of the survey dies a little death.

Rule 1 - Focus the survey! As soon as you wander, even slightly, the respondents will start to question why they are responding at all. I must say the most successful surveys are the 'front of mind' type topics with up to ten questions. The questions follow a logical progression to help the user think about the answers in a logical way. For example you may ask about? 1. what they thought the process was like before 2. did they feel involved in the problem identification process 3. did they feel all problems were identified 4. did the upgrade plan make sense to them 5. was there sufficient communications during the upgrade 6. did the new system live up to what they expected 7. What could have been done better Can you see how the questions followed a rational order, in this case time/process based?

Rule 2 - 10 minutes is an inconvenience, 15 minutes is an investment. When you ask users to respond to a survey you are asking them to spend some of their hard earned time for you. - What are they getting in return? For many surveys it is little if anything. Most people will spend up to 10 minutes out of charity. Anything over this and they will be expecting something in return. It may be as basic at a raffle ticket or as complex as a detailed analysis of their response against a broader population of respondents. Either way it needs to have value to them and be clear at the outset.

This brings me to my next point: No matter how long your survey is, there must be an introduction that states what is expected of the respondent and what they are going to get in return. This is usually put as how long the survey is expected to take (don't lie!) and what if anything they can expect in return. Eg. Rule 3 - Trapped users don't care. We have all done these sorts of surveys, where you start and it seems to go on and on. You get lost as the questions seem to repeat and you are getting no closer to the end. In frustration you then start selecting the mid range response without really reading the question. Not I! I hear you saying. Can I tell you that statistics imply that this starts to happen to some extent after the first ten questions! With only limited investment users can quickly turn to prisoners looking for a way out ignoring you hard thought questions.

I want to make a last note here. A short survey is five questions of a multiple choice type, say radio button or checkbox. A long survey is only 20 questions. Think about why your respondents are investing the time. If you have come to the lower limit of your questions and you are still well over twenty, you might consider putting the more critical ones towards the front.

Everyone wants to make money with little effort. There are infomercials, books, magazines, and websites promoting how you can make a year's worth of salary in just one week. All you have to do is spend a week's salary to purchase the material that will change your life!

Get rich quick schemes have been around since Cain slew Abel and will be around until the 2ND coming, there's no getting around it. There is also a saying about there being no substitute for good, honest, hard labor.

We decided to take a chance on the internet's latest version of making big money with little work; taking surveys. We noticed the opportunity on Google Ads and clicked to check out www.paidsurveysonline.com. Sites like the aforementioned paidsurveys charge a price for membership to their exclusive money making club. Sites such as these promise to reward you taking just a few hours a day of your time with hundreds of dollars in compensation, or trips, or other prizes. Very leery of giving out my credit card to any Tom Dick or Harry, we decided to look for scams associated with that site. To no ones surprise, a huge list of sites or entrees were found. In reading some of the commentary, some paid survey victims mentioned that you can found the same service for free, at sites like www.surveyclub.com. So, I spent the next few hours signing up not just to surveyclub.com, but about 10 other free survey sites that are linked with it.

2 days have gone by and I finally got my first free survey pay off. For a 2 week participation on a panel about coffee, I would be rewarded with 20 cups of coffee, and a free coffee grinder. I need only supply my credit card in order to pay for the shipping and handling charges. Too bad for me, I only drink tea.

Where do you start in improving ineffective communication between people? A good first step in fixing communication problems in any organization is to survey employees. Even if there are no obvious problems, surveys can help get an organization to the next level of performance.

What are the benefits you would expect to see in conducting a communication survey and acting on the results? Well, you could experience some of the following:

* lower turnover
* reduced absenteeism
* less political infighting
* greater levels of manager-worker trust
* reduced defect rates

Including these questions will allow you to perform quantitative analyses that you can use to compare results between different demographics and to use as a benchmark for future surveys.

However, just as importantly, allow provision for free form comments. Everything that people will want to say will not fit into your pre-packaged boxes. A good idea is to run Focus Groups with a random sample of survey respondents after the survey forms have been collected and analyzed. These discussion groups are invaluable in performing a sanity check on your results so far and in teasing out issues that have surfaced in the written survey.

Anonymity

Guarantee absolute anonymity for the people completing the survey and make this clear in the survey instructions. Some employees will either not complete the survey or give sanitized answers if they believe that their identity will be disclosed with their answers and comments.

Sample size

Should you survey the whole organization/department or a select group? Preferably, survey all employees as this gives everyone a sense of being listened to. If the organization/department is excessively large or budget is tight, draw a random sample from each of the demographic groups that you will be reporting on.

If your selection is not random, the survey results will not be representative and you will lose credibility with your client managers and employees. If a demographic group comprises 50 people or less, you will need to survey 100 percent of the people within that group.

Mode of delivery

If the people completing the survey are small in number and at the one location, then hardcopy distribution will not be a problem. As the number of respondents increase and the locations become more dispersed, give more consideration to the need for electronic distribution. Think about putting the survey on a local intranet or internet web server.

To make filling out the form easy for people, have it so that the form can be completed online. If this is not possible, either send the form by email or put it on an accessible server from which people can download it. If your survey respondents are not comfortable with technology, then be wary of online options and provide plenty of employee support if you decide to go down that road.

Inducements and Reminders

Survey participation rates are typically ten percent or less. You can dramatically improve on this completion rate by conducting some simple follow up. As you get closer to the survey cut-off date (of course, you will have publicized that date with your survey), send out an email reminder or have someone call the respondents personally. Advertising a prize to go to the first to complete the surveys will also increase the participation rate.

Distribute results

Once the results are in and analyzed, distribute your findings first to your client managers and then to employees. Withholding results from employees will only breed cynicism and distrust and make your next survey all that more difficult to get a satisfactory response rate.

Break down your results into meaningful groups, such as by department or by region. The reporting groupings need to be small enough that people can identify with the group enough for a meaningful action plan to be developed.

Be prepared for some kickback from defensive managers. Frank employee feedback is both confronting and jarring, especially for those managers not used to it. Use your best facilitation skills to deliver the key messages. If you are in a politically charged environment, use a professional facilitator to perform this sensitive task.

Follow up and Rewards

A survey conducted with no plan for action is not only a waste of resources but will leave employees asking why they bothered to feedback to managers how they felt. Work with each manager to construct an action plan that they agree with. Remember, it is the manager that will be implementing the plan, not you. Get back with each manager three or six months later to review how they are progressing with their plan and report the results to the organization. As you see communication practices improve across the organization, make sure that managers get rewarded.

By following the above tips, you're sure to get the most benefit from your employee communication survey. The key is to leave room for free form comments on the survey form whilst guaranteeing that participants will not be identified in the results. Make the survey accessible and follow up to ensure that a sufficient number of people respond. You can maximize your response rate by offering rewards. Developing a useful, well-written online survey that extracts the information you need from your users can be a challenge. In this article, I will review 14 tips for creating a useful online survey.

1) Write a brief, concise survey. Start with a mental framework that focuses on only what is essential to know. Ask questions only if the answers will give you the data you need and can use. If a question is not important enough to include in your report on the survey's findings, then remove the question. Try to envision each question as its own specific theory that you are testing.

In addition, research has shown that people skim and skip on the web because it is difficult to read lots of heavily condensed text on a computer screen. Most users do not want to scroll through a long page of text, so your online survey completion rate will be higher if the survey is short and succinct.

2) Try to begin the survey with interesting questions. Interesting questions will inspire the respondent to keep reading and complete the survey.

3) Develop questions with answers in the proper format for your purposes. For example, if you believe your students need more time to complete the questions in your lesson, ask, "How long did it take you to complete the unit and accompanying questions?" with various time intervals as possible answers. This is better than asking, "Do you need more time to finish the unit and accompanying questions?" with yes or no as possible responses.

4) Plan ahead of time how you and your company will analyze the information before you send out the final version of the survey. This may affect your questions and format when you realize that the statistical analysis you need to perform cannot be done with these particular question results.

5) Use the simplest language possible and respect the respondent's dignity when constructing questions. Your survey respondents will undoubtedly come from many different groups, and more often than not, are less expert in the field than you are.

6) Use neutral language. The online survey is being developed to find out what your audience thinks and is not a forum for you to air your perceptions or opinions.

7) Relax your grammar a bit so your questions do not sound too formal. For instance, the word "who" is often acceptable when "whom" is technically correct.

8) Be sure to ask only one question at a time and put them in a logical order. Questions like "If you scored less than 70% on the test and you have taken the test another time previous to this, what do you think would help you receive an 80% or above the next time you take the test?" will be difficult for respondents to answer and even more challenging for you to interpret.

9) Avoid double negatives, difficult concepts, and specific recall questions. Respondents are easily perplexed when trying to interpret the meaning of a question that uses double negatives. Respondents can also become quickly overwhelmed and lose detail of events or circumstances that are farther back in time. Most importantly, if the survey is too complex and/or difficult to fill out, respondents won't complete it!

10) Try to use more closed-ended questions, with no more than one or two open-ended questions. Respondents usually have a better understanding of closed-ended questions because they are more straightforward and offer responses they can choose from.

Open-ended questions require a written response. An excessive number of open-ended questions can wear down the respondent and reduce the quality of the answers they provide.

11) Scaled response questions should have answers that are at balanced, comparable intervals. For example, offering choices of excellent, very good, good, and terrible would cause you to miss important information in between the values of good and terrible.

12) Whenever possible, responses should be developed as discrete amounts instead of general statements of quantities, with specific options from which to choose. It's better to ask, "How many times a month do you go to the movies?" "0", "1 to 3 times a month", "3 to 5 times a month or more", instead of "How often do you go to movies?" "almost never", "one and a while", "I am there at least once a week", etc.

13) Name your survey and write a brief introduction. Providing a survey name and a brief introduction are good ways to give your respondents some background and a frame of reference. It also prepares them for what is to come.

14) Craft a well-written subject line for the email you send with the survey to capture your respondents' attention.

While not exhaustive, the points listed above are enough to get you started in the right direction. In summary, a well-written online survey has higher completion rates and is an effective method for gathering information.

In a previous article, I talked about determining when and if a website should be redesigned. One of the suggestions I made was that to help you determine if your website should be redesigned is to send a survey to your top fifty clients or so.

I thought I would go ahead and list some sample questions that could be included on such a survey. Keep in mind that this survey can be used not only to determine if your website needs to be redesigned, but also to determine generally how effective your website is.

I suggest the following comments/questions be answered on a 1-5 scale, where 1 means strongly disagree, 3 means neutral and 5 means strongly agree. An N/A option could be included as well. You should also include a section for comments at the bottom.

* I find it easy to navigate the website. * The content on the site is appropriate. * I find the site's content interesting. * The site's design looks dated. * I like the site's color scheme. * The site should be more interactive. * The site design is appropriate for the subject matter and content. * The title of the site is appropriate placed on each page. * The header of the site is an appropriate size. * The amount of space the navigation takes up is appropriate. * There are too many images on the site. * The site takes too long to load. * I will visit this site again.

In addition to those questions, the following may help as well.

There will probably be questions that are specific to your website that you should also ask. An arcade might ask whether the survey taker prefers arcade games or redemption games. A news publication might ask if the survey taker also receives a hard copy of the newspaper or magazine.

If it is possible, you should send out paper copies of the survey, but also make an online version available. Make sure you have the same questions and options in both places.

In addition to sending the survey to your clients, readers and/or customers, give them incentive to fill it out. Tell them they will be entered into some sort of drawing for filling out the survey. Make sure you include space for their name, address, phone number and email address so you'll know who turned in what survey.

Once you get the surveys, use Excel or a similar program to gather and analyze the data. Then you will know some ways in which you can improve your site.

Method One: Paid Surveys Online This first method has been made quite popular in recent years due to its ease and speed of making money. You get paid on a one-time basis by various companies to take a survey of your opinions about either an idea, product, movie, or any consumer item you can think of. These companies pay money for real people to evaluate their products because they need legitimate, real-world opinions about how good or bad their products are, or if there are any flaws associated with them. It is done all the time and it is very cost-effective for these companies to do these surveys, rather than go ahead with mass production and simply put the product out on the mass market, untested, where it may or may not be successful.

There are always new products being put out by successful companies so that they can stay competitive in today's fast-paced world, thus ensuring that there will always be a steady flow of surveys that will pay anyone to evaluate their products. This is how anyone can make a decent living if they wish to pursue this type of occupation full-time.

Paid surveys are subjected to frauds and scam artists because some unscrupulous individuals actually trick you into taking their surveys that claim they pay you, but never do. The real objective of these scammers is to collect your personal information, bombard it with spam and unsolicited advertisements, and maybe even sell your personal information to other third-parties.

The most common method of scamming people is to get someone to join their paid survey program, fill in their personal information, and then take a few surveys. I personally can complete the $75 dollar surveys in about 50 minutes, so that can give you an idea of how much you can make if you did this full-time. The $5 dollar surveys takes me about 3 minutes to finish.

Method Two: Data Entry Online This method involves filling in a few blank advertising text-boxes for various marketing companies. You get paid a commission if the company is able to sell their products through the ad you just typed in for them. This is far more lucrative than doing paid surveys, but does require a little startup capital of say, $25 dollars in addition to the memebership fee to join these companies.

Legitimate companies will tell you what to input into the text-boxes and do all the marketing for you. These companies actually find it cheaper to pay someone on a commission basis to do some of the grunt work for them, while they can concentrate on marketing and creating sales-ads (which is what these companies tell you to input into the ad text-boxes).

The scam companies want you to do all the work, come up with the marketing, pay for everything, including marketing costs, and then when the sales are made, they do not pay you your commission.

Method Three: Auto-Surfing This is my new favorite form of making money online. It involves joining a website that will require you to "auto-surf" webpages for you to get paid. Auto-surfing is simply letting your web-browsesr visit websites submitted by advertisers for about 10-30 seconds each. When your browser visits the minimum amount of websites (usually 50), you are rewarded with money based on how much cash you paid into the auto-surfing website (this is called your membership/upgrade level). Note that I said your web-browser, not you, doing the work. That means you just log in, click the auto-surf link, and then let the computer do all the work for you. Making money does not get easier than this.

Legitimate auto-surf programs will pay you on time. They spell out all the rules and agreements in their Frequently Asked Questions links. They also pay somewhere around 1% to 3% of your memebership level, each day. Any number higher than that is very likely a ponzi scheme. These auto-surf programs also are backed by businesses or foreign currency exchange, which is why they can afford to pay out such high returns. They also place a small cap on how high your membership level can go, which is how these programs stay in business and not make them go bankrupt. Some programs also have membership expirations, which means the amount of money you put into the programs disappears after a fixed time (usually 1 year). You are also usually limited to one or two accounts, in addition to the membership level cap.

It is entirely possible to earn several thousand dollars a month doing legitimate auto-surf programs, but that usually costs around $20,000 dollars initially. The upside is, you can start auto-surfing with as little as $6 or $10 dollars, and work your way up from there, and still earn that 1%-3% per day on that.

Scam auto-surf programs usually offer ridiculously high returns each day, with an impossible membership expiry duration. For example, an auto-surf that pays 7% daily and upgrades never expire, is very likely a ponzi scheme. However, an auto-surf that pays 12% daily with an expiry of 12 days, is not since if you really look closely at the numbers, the returns per month is relatively low, but high enough to keep everyone happy.

Another sign of auto-surf scams is that they simply do not pay but continually ask for more money despite the company's "problems." It is best to go with auto-surfs that pay on time and have had relatively good reviews by people on the internet.

Most autosurfs pay you weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Any duration longer than that is asking for trouble.

But if you ask for my feedback and then I never hear from you again--even if you do improve your process--from my perspective you've done nothing for me. And that chance to win $10,000? Forget about it. If I wanted to play the lottery, I'd go buy a ticket, where I'm sure somebody actually wins.

So does that mean asking your customers for feedback is a bad idea? No, not at all. It is a great way to better understand your customers and begin a dialog with them. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you develop your strategy:

1. Remember it is About Them, not You or Your Business. Your customer's job is not to make your business better. Ask them what they think so that you can understand and please them, not so you can make your business better. It is subtle, but there is a key difference here. The great thing is as you focus on them and pleasing them, your business will get better.

2. Get Back to Them. If you are going to ask your customers for feedback, make sure you are committed and have the logistics in place to get back to them. At the very least, thank them for their effort and do what you can to make any thing that might be wrong, right.

3. Keep it Short. I can't stress this enough. A short survey will increase your response rate and increase the accuracy of the feedback. Remember my experience with Dexonline? About four minutes into it, I was clicking on whatever came up first just to get done.

4. Remember your Goal. This goes hand-in-hand with number three. The customer feedback survey is not the place to try to get the answers to all of your questions (no matter how critical they may be). Your real goal is to get an indication of customers' overall perceptions and start a dialog. If you really need answers to other questions, get back in touch with them and ask them if they'd be willing to participate in a more in-depth study. Think of it as one more opportunity to increase customer loyalty.

5. Use an Automated Tool. There is no reason not to use an automated tool to collect feedback. Your results will be more accurate and timely and it will be easier for you to get back to your customers quickly (see number 2).
